The first 80 years of the modern Olympic Games saw participants wearing badges that often were made of bronze or brass. Some were gilded or silver-plated and often with enamel detail. Some of the badges had ribbons; others were numerically marked on the front or back and most of them showed the participants role via the use of different colours and explanatory text. As a way of identifying participants, badges were worn on their jerseys or blazer. The earliest badges were small masterpieces, beautifully designed and intricately detailed
