The X factor : extreme sports and the Olympic Games / Jessie Dai... [et al.]

Some fifty years ago, very few people were aware of the existence of an array of individualistic physical activities centered on daring, freedom, creativity and fun. Probably nobody imagined that, a few decades later, these activities would become famous under the label of "extreme sports", enjoy worldwide popularity and join the program of the Olympic Games - both Summer and Winter. Because these activities are different from the collective-minded, disciplined, regulated traditional sports, their integration into the mainstream sports culture has not been smooth. In this paper, the authors aim to analyse the process of integration, assess the benefits and disadvantages it brings to the world of sport, and think of ways in which it could improve.
